Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 19 Oct. 1911.
Mrs. Frederick Meyer died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Meisner, west of Elkader, on Tuesday afternoon. She was 75 years and eight months old and had been in poor health for a long time.
Louisa Wilke was born in Mecklenburg Germany, Feb. 16, 1836, and came to America with her parents in 1854. In 1856 she was married to Frederick Meyer and they lived in Garnavillo until 1863, when they moved to a farm in Boardman township. In 1900 she moved to Elkader, making this her home since that time. Nine children came to bless her home, eight of whom are living. They are: Carl H. Meyer, of Postville; Theo. H. Meyer, of Minden, Neb.; Mrs. Lovina Weil, of Blairstown, Ia.; H. L. Meyer and A. C. Meyer, of Castalia, Ia.; J. P. Meyer and Mrs. Mary Meisner, of near Elkader, and Mrs. Emma Englehardt, of Luana. Her husband and one son, Fred, died some years ago.
Two brothers, John and Fred Wilke, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Schreiber, living in Nebraska, and Mrs. Minnie Kamin, of Luana, are also left to mourn her decease, together with twenty-nine grandchildren and other relatives.
Mrs. Meyer was a good woman, a kind neighbor, a true wife and loving mother. She lived the early pioneer life in her little home with a large family of children and many hardships she braved. Naturally of an upright character she always persuaded her children to follow the path of righteousness through kind and tender admonitions and worthy example. Lately she had often told them how glad she was that her teachings had not been in vain. She died rich in the love of worthy devoted children.
Mrs. Meyer, at her special request, was brought back yesterday to her home in Elkader and the funeral services were held this afternoon in the German church, Rev. Franke officiating. A large number of friends and neighbors were present and accompanied the remains to their last resting place in the East Side cemetery beside her husband and son.
