Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Dec. 1911. Garnavillo News column.
Anna Elise Stiehl, nee Zucker, was born on March 29, 1836, in Handorf, Mecklenburg, Schweren, and died on Dec. 6th, at 5:45 p.m.
In 1861, in company with six other families, the family came to America. The journey across the waters lasted six weeks and three days. On June 3rd they arrived in Garnavillo and here on June 16th she was united in marriage to John H. Stiehl. One child blessed this union. On Feb. 4, 1897, her husband was taken in death and since then she has made her home with her son John, where she received the best of care. She was of a strong disposition and up to a short time before her last illness was able to lend a helping hand. In October, 1910, she suffered a slight paralytic stroke, but rallied and again, two weeks ago, she suffered another stroke. This affected her vocal organs. From this time on she gradually grew weaker, death coming to her relief on the evening of Dec. 6th. Besides her son John, her demise is mourned by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild and a large circle of friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church on Saturday, Dec. 9th, Rev. Braun officiating. Among the out of town attendants at the funeral were: Alma Stiehl-Stickford, of Monticello; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Stiehl, of Garner; and L. J. Stiehl, of Hay Springs, Neb.
