Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 9 Nov. 1911.
Yesterday afternoon J. G. Hempel received the sad news of the death of his father, who had been in poor health for some time.
Charles F. Hempel was born in Friedland, Germany, July 24th, 1831, and died at Charles City, Iowa, Nov. 8th, 1911, at the advanced age of 80 years, 3 months and 12 days.
He came to America in 1852 and for two years lived in Erie county, New York. In 1853 he was married to Dorothea Newman at Lancaster, New York.
In 1854 he came west by rail as far as Galena, Ill., at that time the terminus of the railroad, then traveled by boat to McGregor's Landing, which was then only a boat landing with a few houses. He located in Giard township where he made his home until 1882, when he moved to a farm in Farmersburg township. In 1897 he disposed of his holdings and went to Charles City, where he has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Carrie Schmidt.
He leaves seven children to mourn his loss: Charles at Hillsboro, N.D.; Edwin and Adeline at Minneapolis; Mrs. Mary Bouges at Nashua, Ia.; Mrs. Catherine Debes and Mrs. Carrie Schmidt at Charles City, and John G. at Elkader.
This closes the life of another sturdy pioneer of this county; a man of sterling integrity in all his dealings, steadfast purpose and high character; a kind neighbor and a true friend.
His remains will be brought to Monona and buried on Friday in the Giard cemetery beside his faithful wife, who died in 1896. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Raabe, of the German Evangelical church, of which he was a member.
