Clayton County Register, Thur., 28 Oct. 1926. From the Volga City News.
Nancy Jane Peake passed away Wednesday, October 20, 1926, at 2:13 p.m. at a sanitarium in Prairie du Chien, Wis., at the age of 72 years, five months and 14 days.
She was born May 6, 1854, near Princeton, Ill., and was the daughter of Osias and Emily Hunt Self.
At the age of six years she came with her parents to Winneshiek county, Decorah, Iowa, moving by covered wagon. She endured many hardships the same as all other pioneers that were settling in this country in those early days. Her girlhood days were spent in and around Decorah.
On January 23, 1872, she was united in marriage to John Peake at Decorah. They soon moved to Fayette county which was their home for a number of years, and some forty years ago they came to Clayton county and for the past twenty-five years she has lived on the home farm near Elkader.
To this union four children were born, three sons and one daughter. The oldest son Charley, preceded her in death on November 1, 1923.
Those left to mourn are Chester and Elmer at home and Mrs. Alf Schneider at Elkader. Thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two brothers, John of Rock Rapids and Fred of Clear Lake also survive her.
The deceased has been in failing health for the past thirteen years, although she was spared to take care of her husband who had also been in failing health for a number of years and who passed away August 17, 1925. Since that time she has failed rapidly.
On Monday October 18, she was taken to the sanitarium at Prairie du Chien for treatment but all that medical skill and loving hands could do was of no avail and on Wednesday, October 20th, at 2:15 p.m. she passed quietly to the Great Beyond where there is no pain or suffering.
She was a faithful wife and mother, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. She will not only be missed by her family but by everyone who knew her.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, October 23 at two o'clock at the Presbyterian church in Volga City. The services were conducted by Rev. L. H. Shindledecker who was assisted by Rev. A. S. Kilbourn of the Congregational church of Elkader. Interment was made in Hill Crest cemetery.
To the sorrowing relatives we extend most sincere sympathy..- Volga City News.
