Clayton County Register, Thur., 21 Oct. 1926. Garnavillo column.

John Harnack, Sr., died on Oct. 15, at the home of his son John Harnack of Garnavillo. John Juergen Henry Elias Harnack was born as the son of Frederick Paul Harnack and his wife Wilhelmina Dorothea Maria, nee Suhrbeer, on Dec. 14, 1833, at Conow in Mecklenberg, Schwerin. He was raised in Germany and in 1865 came to America. He came directly from N.Y. to Clayton county, where he was united in marriage to Anna Mary Katherine Elizabeth Hahn, Rev. Seifert of Clayton Center performing the marriage ceremony. The young couple lived on a farm in Jefferson township where their son John was born. After two years they moved on a farm in Clayton township, which they occupied 21 years. From there they moved on a farm near the Hawkeye school, where he remained until the death of his wife on Jan. 8, 1897. Mr. and Mrs. John Harnack invited the aged father and the aged grandmother Hahn to spend their declining years with them on their farm. He liked it so well at this place that he remained there with his grandchild Wilbur Harnack long after his son had moved to Garnavillo. Three years ago it was found advisable to take him for better care to Garnavillo where he was well cared for by Mrs. John Harnack until his death, which occurred on Oct. 15, at 12:30 p.m. He had reached the age of 92 years, 10 months and one day.

Those who are left to mourn are: Mr. and Mrs. John Harnack of Garnavillo; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Harnack of Clayton township; and his two great-grandchildren Gertrude and Barbara Harnack; two brothers, Joachin near Postville, age 91, and Geo. who is 90 years of age, in Sheldon, Iowa. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
