Elkader Register, Thur., 21 Oct. 1926.
Fred Buckmann, son of Frederick B. and his wife Sophia Tuemler was born at Huntington, Franklin county, Indiana, Aug. 23, 1845. He came to Iowa with his parents and three brothers and two sisters in early boyhood. It was in the early pioneer days when they traveled along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The family located on a farm in Read township where Fred attended the public school in that neighborhood. In 1870 he entered the mercantile business of Herman Strandemeyer in Garnavillo and in 1872 together with his brother William started in the same business here in Farmersburg. After resigning from business he worked as a helper in the lumber business of Ben Johnson, William Fuelling and Otto Fuelling, until infirmities of old age compelled him to give up active labor and retire to the county home, where he passed away at the age of 81 years, one month and 17 days. All his brothers and one sister passed out of this life before him. One sister, Mrs. Koth survives him.
The deceased was well liked by everyone on account of his jovial nature, always friendly with everyone. Two days before his death he was in Farmersburg attending a meeting of the Masonic Lodge and no one thought his end was so near.
