Elkader Register, Thur., 2 Sept. 1926. Colesburg column.
Joseph Harbaugh was born July 11, 1834, in Bradford county, Pennsylvania, and departed this life Aug. 21, 1926, at the age of 92 years, 1 month and 10 days. He was the oldest of a family of seven children, one brother still remains. At the age of 19 years he married Mahola Heck in 1833 (his age would indicate 1853). To this union were born 10 children, Ellen McDowell, Daniel, William, Charles, Jefferson, Joseph, Jr., Mrs. Adaline Stone (deceased), Mrs. Mary Catherine Hansel, Mrs. Malinda Jennings (deceased), Nettie Jane Harbaugh. He embraced the Dunkard faith when quite young and lived a consistent Christian life. He was one of the early pioneers of Iowa, coming to Clayton county at the age of 21 years with his young wife and his parents. After a few years he returned to his native state, then he went to Mansfield, Iowa, where he remained three years. They then returned to Iowa, where he remained until his death. On April 13, 1886, his wife was called to her reward and on Dec. 15, 1891, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lizzie Shay of Pennsylvania. They adopted a daughter who is now Mrs. Willard Harbaugh. He leaves to mourn one brother, nine children, 56 grandchildren, a large number of great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, thus making five generations. Funeral services were held in Fairview church by Rev. Hollingshead. Interment made in the Brown cemetery which he had helped to lay out when the country was new. Thus passes another of our early pioneers.
