Elkader Register, Thur., 22 July 1926.

William Patow, for many years a respected citizen of Elkader, Iowa, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 15th, 1926, at about nine o'clock in the morning, at the age of 67 years, 4 months and 12 days. Ever ready to lend a helping hand, he had taken his neighbor, Mr. Henry Storbeck, out to the old Storbeck farm, where the latter's son, William, had been seriously injured in a run-away the previous day. On returning home Mr. Patow worked in the garden for a little while, then entering the house, he complained to his sister of having a peculiar sensation and pain. A doctor was summoned at once, but when same arrived a few minutes later, the patient was beyond help, a paralytic stroke had caused the heart to stop.

The departed, a son of Frederick Patow and his wife Anna, nee Dahling, was born in Germany, March 3, 1859. At the age of seven years he came with his parent to this country where the family settled on a farm in Read township, Clayton county, Ia. Here William Patow remained until about 21 years ago, when he decided to give up active farm life and became a resident of Elkader. As he was never married, his older sister, Mrs. John Hagensick, had charge of the household duties for about 15 years.

For the last few years Mr. Patow had been in rather poor health, having had a slight paralytic stroke once before. Although he recovered from it sufficiently to be up and around, those best familiar with his condition realized that another stroke might follow the first at any time. And yet, when occurred what had been expected for some time, it came so sudden that it was almost too much of a shock for those nearest and dearest to him, especially to his aged sister, Mrs. John Hagensick, who had so tenderly cared for her brother all these years, as only a loving sister is able to do. She will sadly miss him in the days to come, as also will her children, the nephews and nieces of the departed, who mourn the loss of an affectionate uncle, who was ever ready to give advice and render assistance when needed. They are: Mrs. Anna Wagner, Elkader, Mrs. Conrad Samp, Oelwein, Will Hagensick, Brookings, S.D., Mrs. Pierce Moser and Mrs. Will Looby, of Nunda, S.D., John Hagensick of Montana, and Glen Hagensick of Elkader.

Besides those mentioned the departed leaves other relatives and a host of friends who will miss his kindly words and greeting.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the late home, conducted by Rev, Franke, and at 2 o'clock at the Zions Lutheran church at Clayton Center, where Rev. Wuestenberg and Franke conducted the services. Interment was made in the Clayton Center cemetery.
