Elkader Register, Thur., 17 June 1926. Garnavillo columns.
Julius Henry Tangman, the eldest of 7 children of Mr. Cord Tangman and his wife Wilmelmina Kopp, was born Jan. 24, 1848, in New Bremen and at the age of 9 he came with his parents in a covered wagon to this county. The trip took about two weeks through Indiana and Illinois. His parents located on a farm about four miles west of town. He received his education at the country school and his religious training in our church. He was confirmed by Rev. Stockfeld in 1862. When a young man 28 years old he started a store in Garnavillo and as his business grew rapidly he decided to build a modern building as a harness shop. At that time he had the largest and best equipped building for general merchandising in this vicinity. In after years he moved on a farm and conducted a livery for many years. On the 9th day of February, 1876, he was married to Mary Schumacher and to this union were born seven children, three of whom preceded the parents in death. Sidonie died in infancy, as did Frederick and Louis. His wife died July 13, 1918. Since then he made his home with his oldest son George. Occasionally he would visit his other children. In the summer of 1921 he spent in Ohio with his son Ernie. He enjoyed good health until July of last year when he suffered an attack of heart trouble. His condition became greatly aggravated last winter, but due to the good care he received he improved so well that he was strong enough to call on his brother William and even spoke of going to his son Ottmar in Dubuque. But God's ways are not always our ways. Although his loved ones knew that he was weak, yet his end came rather unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon at 1:30. He leaves to mourn his death four sons, George married to Louise Jahnke in Garnavillo, Bruno married to Etta Harker in Minneapolis,, Aerny married to Emilie Ketter in Ketterville, Ohio, Ottmar married to Anora Harberg in Dubuque. Eleven grandchildren; three brothers, Wm. of Garnavillo and Henry Tangeman of Gretna, Neb., Ben Tangeman of Garnavillo. Two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Limbach and Mrs. Mahale Schmidt, both of Garnavillo. He reached an age of 78 years, 4 months and 17 days.
(Note: The surname Tangman/Tangeman was spelled both ways in the article, as shown.)
