Mr. Matthias Steeman, only son of John Steeman and his wife Maria, nee Rhode, was born in Louden, Schleswig Holstein on the 28th of March, 1860. In 1882 he came with his parents to America. For a few months the family lived in the state of Pennsylvania where Mr. Steeman had employment in a foundry. They then came to Iowa and took up permanent abode near Garnavillo. For 20 years Mr. Steeman lived on the place which was his final homestead. On January 21, 1885, he was married to Miss Wilhelmina Haack from Mecklenberg Schwerin. This union was blessed with eight children, three of whom preceded the father in death. Edwin and Willy in infancy and Louise at the age of 21 years. About a month ago Mr. Steeman took seriously ill with gall bladder trouble, complicated with heart afflictions. The physicians and the family spared nothing which might add to his comfort and prolong his life but death came Saturday, June 12, at 4:45 p.m. His mother died 15 years ago on the same date. Deceased is deeply mourned by his wife, Mrs. Steeman, his two sons John of Klemme, Ia., Henry of Galena, Ill., three daughters, Anna at home, Mrs. Amanda Henry of Garnavillo township, Mrs. Alice Sommer of Elkader and four grandchildren, Agatha and Ila Steeman of Klemme, Arlene Henry and Mildred Mae Sommers, one half-sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Volquardt of Elkader. He reached the age of 66 years, 2 months and 15 days. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon by Rev. K. W. Braun from the home and at St. Paul's church. Interment was made in the family lot in the old cemetery.
