Elkader Register, Thur., 6 May 1926.

Mrs. William Dahling, an aged and respected resident of Elkader, was called by the Angel of Death on Friday, April 30, 1926, at 5:30 o'clock in the morning at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 23 days.

Marie, daughter of Henry and Katherine Nieland, was born Dec. 2, 1845, at Gueltz, Mecklenberg, Germany. There she attended school and remained until she had attained the age of 25 years, when on May 15, 1870, she came to America and on June 20th of the same year to Clayton county, Iowa. A few weeks after her arrival on July 11, 1870, she was united in marriage to William Dahling at Littleport, Iowa. Six children were born to this union, of which two, Frank and Wilhelmina, preceded their mother in death.

For many years the family lived on a farm near Littleport, experiencing with many others the hardships of the pioneer farm life of former days. After years of hard work, when the children had grown up and established homes of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Dahling, already advanced in years, moved to Three Corners south of town, where they remained for some years, then on May 10, 1914 moving to Elkader, where they have lived ever since.

It was indeed a most joyful event, when on July 11, 1920, the aged couple was privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary in the presence of their children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. In spite of her advanced years, Mrs. Dahling would always manage to attend her household duties as best she could, but for the last six months she suffered more or less from pleurisy and finally pneumonia set in. All during her sickness she received the best care from husband, children, sister and good neighbors.

Her departure is mourned by the aged husband, William Dahling; four children, Mrs. Ida Bente, Elkader, Mrs. Emma Rickert and Mrs. Alma Barthel of Owatonna, Minn., and Henry Dahling on the old home farm near Littleport. She also leaves twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Wilhelmina Brockmiller, of Owatonna, Minn., and many old time friends and neighbors, all of which will keenly feel the passing of a good woman.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the late home and at 2 o'clock at the Evangelical church, Rev. Franke officiating. Burial was in East Side cemetery.
