Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Apr. 1926.

Mrs. Julia McDermott was born July 6th, 1849, in Boston, Mass. She died April 9, 1926, aged 76 years, 9 months and three days. She was of a family of five children, one brother and four sisters. Her four sisters preceded her in death. In 1851 she came with her parents, James and Mary Farry, to McGregor, where she resided until her marriage to James J. McDermott on February 8, 1869, when she became a resident of Cox Creek township which has since been her home.

She was the mother of nine children, eight of whom are living: Thomas of Boise, Idaho, Edward of Chicago, Lawrance of San Diego, Cal., Mrs. Ernest Johnson, of Fallon, Nev., Colletta, John, Emmett, and Mrs. Martin Hennessy of Strawberry Point. One son, William, having died some years ago; also her beloved husband who departed this life October 16, 1916.

Having known Mrs. McDermott all of our life we shall confine our humble tribute to her noble womanhood, manifested on all occasions. A womanhood possessing the highest characteristics of which our human nature is capable and mother's love which knew no station, no condition but reached out embracing in true friendship and neighborly solicitude for all those with whom she came in contact. Her good soul loved all humanity. For our sake and all humanity we are glad that she lived. She showed in her life that humanity is indeed grand and noble, can be self sacrificing and yet enjoy life and the love of our fellow man to the highest perfection. The funeral was held from Sacred Heart church, Cox Creek, Monday. Requiem high mass being said by Father Ryan of Romona, S.D., assisted by Rev. Rooney of West Union, Rev. Murtagh of Edgewood and Rev. Heatherington of Volga. Her pastor delivered the funeral sermon and paid her a high and deserving tribute. Among the relatives who attended the funeral, which was one of the largest ever held in that church were Father Ryan of Romona, S.D., Mrs. Ernie Buck and Mrs. Millie Coffee of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mrs. Lamena Sampson of Pipestone, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Leslie of Waverlie, Ia., Peter and Mayme Humphrey of Monona. The casket bearers were P. J. Maher, Geo. Feller, Jas. Sullivan, Greg Debes, P. H. Quinn and J. P. Ivory.

A good woman has gone to her reward. May she rest in peace. - Contributed.
