Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Apr. 1926.

John Bals, 75, a prominent long time resident of Elkport, passed away at his home there on Wednesday of last week, after a long illness. Deceased was born in Germany, coming to America when a young man, and settling at Elkport, Iowa, where the remainder of his useful life was spent. He was married at Elkport to Miss Ida Adler who preceded him in death a number of years ago. For a number of years Mr. Bals was successfully engaged in the harness business at Elkport. Of late years leading a retired life. He was a man of a progressive spirit, and was a tireless worker for all things to better his community. He was a kind and true father and friends, always ready with heart and hand to help those in need, which won for him many warm friends during life and by whom he will be remembered. He was a faithful member of the Lutheran church. His death is deeply mourned by three daughters, Mrs. Hattie Beck, of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Bertha Fuchs of Chicago and Mrs. Anna Levinske of Elkport, Iowa; several grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends by whom this good and upright man will be sadly missed. Funeral services were held at Elkport on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Damm officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Elkport cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends from far and near, which showed that deceased was held in high regard by all who knew him.
