Elkader Register, Thur., 1 April 1926. Strawberry Point column.

Cyrus S. Hines, son of Hiram and Martha Hines, was born at Scotch Grove, Jones county, Iowa, June 7, 1842, and died Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock, March 27, 1926, in the hospital at Independence, Iowa, aged 80 years, 9 months and 20 days. Of a family of four children he was the last surviving one. He was united in marriage to Miss Mattie Madison January 13, 1870. To this union were born four children, a son, James G., and a daughter, Mrs. Lena Davis, preceded their father in death, the remaining are Mrs. Bertha Allen and Mrs. Martha Jordan of this place. Most of his life was spent in and around Strawberry Point. Mr. Hines's life since coming here in early manhood has been identified as a farmer. He was a real pioneer in that he cleared the land and brought crops of grain from nature's soil, giving not only physical strength but also ambitious spirit to the family he was rearing (several words blurred) settled country. Thus another one that has lived long and well has taken the journey which Job spoke when he said: " When a few years (more) are come, then shall I go my way, whence I shall not return." He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and attended whenever his health permitted. Besides his wife and two daughters, he leaves other relatives and a large circle of friends. Funeral services were held in the Congregational church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Maxwell and assisted by Rev. Turner, pastor of the M.E. church. The I.O.O.F. had charge of the services at the grave.
