Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Mar. 1926.

A message to D. E. Livingood received about noon Tuesday announced the death of J. P. McDermott at the home of his brother, Thos. J. McDermott, in Canton, S.D., as the result of an accident. Later information stated that he was struck by a train at the depot early Tuesday morning while mailing letters, presumably from the hotel operated by his brother.

Mr. McDermott went to Chicago last fall and visited a sister, Mrs. Mary A. Gilberts, for a time then went to his brother's at Canton, S.D. in December to spend the winter.

Mr. McDermott was born May 20, 1855, and was nearly 71 years of age. He is survived by his brother, Thomas J. McDermott of Canton, S.D., and his sister, Mrs. Gilberts, besides nieces and nephews and other more distant relatives. Mrs. Gilberts arrived here today to make arrangements for the funeral.

Mr. McDermott's remains are expected here tomorrow and the funeral will be held at St. Joseph's church at 10 o'clock, Saturday morning.

Mr. McDermott was a man of cheery disposition with a pleasant greeting to all who met him and his many friends sorrow at his death and sympathize with the relatives.

James Patrick McDermott, eldest child of Patrick and Ann McGowan McDermott, was born at Huron, Ohio, May 20, 1855, being seventy years, five months and nineteen days of age on the day of his death, which occurred March 9, 1926, at Canton, S.D. He was killed at the railroad station by a freight train while mailing letters.

He came to Iowa with his parents when he was about two years old and settled on a farm near Communia. His father died when he was nine years old. His mother and a brother, Lawrence, having preceded him in death. He was on the home farm and followed the occupation of a farmer until 1879 when he went west and continued the same occupation until 1885. Returning to Osborne that year he married Bridget Carter. For many years they operated the Pleasant Valley hotel at Osborne and worked his farm adjoining it. Here they were known for many miles around for their genial hospitality. In 1911 the hotel was destroyed by fire and they moved to Elkader that year. March 5, 1923, his faithful companion was called to the Great Beyond. Since that time he has spent his summers cultivating his garden and his winters with his brother, Thomas, at Canton, S.D., returning each year in the early spring.

Those who survive him are one brother, T. J. McDermott, two nieces, Florence and Margaret McDermott, one nephew, Boyd McDermott, all of Canton, S.D., one half-sister, Mary A. Jallette, and his step-mother, Sarah Dunn McDermott of Chicago, Ill.

J. P. McDermott was a kind and obliging friend and neighbor,, a great lover of nature and the beautiful. He was a man possessed of a congenial temperament which made him welcome wherever he went. He will be greatly missed by relatives and friends and neighbors.

The funeral was held from the late residence on First street with services at St. Joseph's church, Rev. Father Taken officiating, on Saturday at 10 o'clock. Burial in St. Joseph's cemetery.

The acting pall bearers were: N. E. Glesne, John Bahr, D. E. Livingood, E. A. Burlingame, John Molumby and Richard Leonard.
