E. H. Abel was called to Luana on Saturday by the death of his sister, Mrs. Edward Scheffert. Mrs. Scheffert, whose maiden name was Mathilde Abel, passed away at her home at Luana on last Friday, after an illness of a long duration, at the age of 54 years, 10 months and 10 days. Deceased was born on a farm in Garnavillo township on April 16, 1871, where she spent the greater part of her life. She was married at Garnavillo to Mr. Edward Scheffert. For a number of years the couple resided on a farm in Garnavillo township, thence moving onto a farm in Monona township where they lived until about a year when they became residents of Luana. Mrs. Scheffert was a loving mother, sister, wife and friend, always ready with heart and hand to do acts of kindness for her family and friends and her memories will be forever cherished by all who knew her. Her untimely death is deeply mourned by her husband, four sons, Verni, Alvin, Elmer and Orlando, all of Monona township; two daughters, Mrs. Viola Ferguson of near Monona and Angeline at home; two grandchildren; five brothers, E. H. Abel of Guttenberg, Herman Abel of Canada, Julius Abel of Dubuque, Ferdinand Abel of Monona and August Abel of near Elkader, and many other friends and relatives who will sadly miss her. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church at Luana on Sunday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in Monona cemetery. The funeral was largely attended.
