Elkader Register, Thur., 25 Feb. 1926.
Anna Gruenwalt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gruenwalt, was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, August 2, 1860, and passed away at the county asylum, Elkader, Iowa, Sunday evening, Feb. 21, 1926, at the age of sixty-five years, six months and nineteen days.
The childhood days of the departed were spent at Guttenberg. She never learned to know her father, as he was killed in an accident five months previous to her birth. Her mother was married again to John Schmidt, then the family moved to a farm in Cox Creek township.
After the death of her parents, Anna found a good home with her half-brother, Albert Schmidt and wife, in Cox Creek township, came with them to Elkader, March 3, 1907, and remained with them until some time after the death of Mrs. Schmidt, which occurred May 23, 1923. Mr. Schmidt did all he could do for Anna, but when the tender ministrations of a woman's hands were wanting in the home, it became a necessity, after long and careful deliberations, to take Anna to an institution, where she could and would receive the proper care. This was done on August 23, 1923. There she remained until the time of her death; the cause of which was hardening of the arteries.
The departed leaves two sisters, Mrs. Charles Heiden of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. Minnie Snedigar, of Los Angeles, Cal., and a half-brother, Albert W. Schmidt, of Elkader, Iowa, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 24th, at the Evangelical church, Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
