Elkader Register, Thur., 23 Feb. 1926. Volga column.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Susie and two sons Clyde and Hal of Marshalltown were called here by the serious illness and death of Mrs. Susie's mother, Mrs. Leete.
Mr. and Mrs. Mel Griffith were called to Volga Monday night on account of the serious illness of her mother, Mrs. George Leete.
On Monday evening when Mrs. George Leete was filling a kerosene lamp, her clothing in some way became ignited and she was very badly burned before those that went to her assistance could extinguish the flames. She was badly burned about her face and neck. Medical help was called at once and all that loving care and help could do was done to ease her suffering. She rallied and talked with her family, pastor and friends, who had hope for her recovery, but on Wednesday morning she sank very rapidly, the shock being too much for her, and she passed away. The sympathy of the entire community and county around is with the bereaved. Mary Babara Montz was born in Sperry township, Clayton county, Ia., on August 14, 1869, and was the eldest daughter of John and Mary Montz. She attended the rural schools and at an early age was baptized in the Methodist faith. There being no church in those early days, a traveling minister conducted services in the different homes at various intervals. On March 19, 1891, she was united in marriage to George A. Leete and to this union nine children were born, one dying in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Ruby Susie, Marshalltown, Iowa, Mrs. Fern Griffith, Decorah, Iowa, Mrs. Hazel Candee and Mrs. Flossie Konzen of Volga, Iowa, and Velma, Don, Ted and Ray, at home. Her husband, two little grandchildren, Klyde and Hal Susie, one sister, Mrs. Ida Humbert of Arlington and two brothers, J. J. Montz of Arlington, Iowa, and M. C. Montz of Clearwater, Kansas, also survive; also W. C. Leete, a brother-in-law who has made his home with the family for the entire period of their married life. Her parents, three brothers and one sister have preceded her in death. The funeral was held from the Methodist church Saturday forenoon. Rev. Elwick of Fairbanks, an old friend of the family, preached the sermon. Rev. Davies, her pastor assisting in the services. Interment was made in Hill Crest cemetery.
