Patrick Ambrose Phalen*, well known resident of this community, departed this life Thursday, December 8th, 1932, at 1:30 p.m. at his home in Boardman township.
Mr. Phalen was born in Ireland 75 years ago. He came to this country at the age of seven years. The early part of his life was spent around Dubuque and vicinity. He was a graduate of St. Joseph's college in Dubuque, which is now Columbia college. After finishing college he came to Garber and started farming. He was united in marriage to Julia Conely and to this union five children were born. Two children preceded him in death but he is survived by three sons, Clarence and James of Elkader and Leo of Minneapolis.
The funeral services were held from the residence to the St. Joseph's Catholic church in Elkader. The Very Rev. J. P. Taken sang the requiem mass. Burial was made in St. Josephs' cemetery.
The casket bearers were: John Downey, John Curran, Mike Conley, Frank Kelleher, Clem Curran and Lewis Meisner.

Note: WPA records show Patrick Phelen buried in St. Joseph's cemetery, although his surname is spelled Phelan on his gravestone.
The surname Conely may be misspelled
