GUTTENBERG: The death of Mrs. Henry Fischer, Sr., nee Christine Duwe, occurred at her home in Guttenberg last Thursday at 4:45 p.m., at the age of 81 years, eight months and 22 days, following a long illness. Deceased was one of this community's pioneer residents and worthy mothers. She was born in Linsberg, Germany, on March 2, 1851, coming to America with her parents when two years old, and settling at Guttenberg. On May 29, 1868, she was married at Guttenberg to Henry Fischer, Sr., who preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1913. One year after their marriage the couple settled on a farm near Clayton, where they resided for 36 years. In the spring of the year 1907 the family again came to Guttenberg to make their home, where deceased spent the remainder of her ambitious and true Christian life. For a time the couple also resided in western Iowa. Mrs. Fischer was a kind and loving mother, always ready with heart and hand to do acts of kindness for her family and friends. She was held in high esteem by all who knew her. During her illness she was a patient sufferer, and all that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for her to save her life, but all to no avail. Her death is deeply mourned by three sons, William and Henry of Clayton township, and Otto of Postville; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Harnack of Monona, Mrs. Ida Spengler of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Mathilde Reinitz of Guttenberg; 18 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends who will all sadly miss this good and true woman. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. Adix at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church in Guttenberg Sunday afternoon, with interment in the city cemetery. The funeral was very well attended by relatives and friends from far and near. Three sons have also preceded the mother in death.
