Clayton County Register, Thur., 1 Dec. 1932. St. Olaf column.
Rachel Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Torkel Halstenson, was born in Clayton county, Iowa, Aug. 10, 1854. On Jan. 16, 1874, she was united in marriage to John Olson. To this union eight children were born, all of whom survive: Tillie, Mrs. John Olson of Hillsboro, N. Dak.; Josie, Mrs. Conrad Reinhardt of Petrel, N. Dak.; Mary, Mrs. Elling Houg of Elkader; Emma, Mrs. Henry Rear of Clermont; Henry Olson of Pasadena, Calif.; Adolph Olson of St. Olaf; Tom and Ole Olson of Elgin, Iowa. In January, 1890, the husband of this household was taken out of time into eternity through death. Thereby saddening the widow, who was left alone to bear trials of separation, and pined at the loss of her loved one. Nevertheless, she found consolation and comfort in the one who speaks, "Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest."
She was a kind and loving helpmate in times of suffering, a kind and lovable neighbor, ever ready to help when help was needed. She suffered a stroke in 1918 and after that time she made her home with her son Tom until her death. She was one who suffered so patiently that one not knowing she was afflicted would not notice - only her quiet and happy countenance. Three weeks ago she was stricken with a stroke from which various other complications arose and on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at 4 o'clock, her soul was carried by angels to her Creator, in whom she trusted. All was done to brighten and lighten the burden she bore in her last hours. Among the surviving relatives, besides her children, Mrs. Olson leaves two sisters, Mrs. Betsy Christianson of St. Olaf, Mrs. Christ Halverson of Lake Mills, Ia.; and three brothers, Carl Halstenson of Inwood, Iowa, Halsten Halstenson of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Ansten Halstenson of Canada. One brother preceded her in death. She is also survived by 43 grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, besides a number of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. Funeral services were held at the Marion church, Nov. 25, where she was laid to rest in the Marion cemetery. Rev. S. J. Strandjord of St. Olaf officiated.
