Mrs. Ernest Backhaus died at Mercy Hospital at Dubuque, Sunday evening, April 3

Mrs. Backhaus was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Fred Mohning and was born in Clayton township July 18, 1899. She was christened by Rev. Sommerlad Seot. 10, 1899, and confirmed by Rev. K. Wm. Braun at St. Paul's church, March 21, 1913. On October 4, 1922, she was united in marriage to Ernest C. Backhaus and the young people made their home on the Backhaus farm about three miles south of Garnavillo.

Two sons, Delmer and Harlan, were born to this union. After being in poor health for about a year Mrs. Backhaus underwent an operation at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque last Thursday. The operation was successful and she was on the way to recovery when other complications set in last Sunday afternoon and she died at eight thirty Sunday evening, at the age of 32 years, 8 months and 15 days. She leaves her husband, two sons, her parents, sister Evangeline and two brothers, Lester and Foster.

Funeral service was held at St. Peter's church Thursday afternoon, the Rev. _unge officiating. Interment was made in the new cemetery.

Relatives from a distance who were here to attend the funeral of Mrs. Ernest Backhaus were Mrs. Anna Hemme and son Ernest, Mrs. Oeibber and Mrs. Arno Mueller of Laverne, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. E. Kirkman and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Meyer of Van Horne, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Putzier of Mitchell, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. John Backhaus and son Albert of Postville; Mrs. _rving Schulte, Mrs. John Witt and Messrs. Allison and Herman Harnack of Remsen; and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Reichart of Littleport.
