Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Jan. 1901. Strawberry Point column.
Mrs. Mary Jane Nelson Joy died at her home in this place Dec. 28th, 1900. Mary Jane Nelson was born in Washington county, Vt., July 30th, 1824, and was married to her now bereaved husband, Solomon Joy, Feb. 19th, 1844. Ten children brightened their home, of which four are left to mourn the loss of a dear, kind and honest mother. Early in youth Mrs. Joy united with the M.E. church in which she has been an earnest worker until the 9th of July, 1900, when she withdrew her card and united with the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and was baptized by Elder J. R. Sutton. Mr. and Mrs. Joy lived in Illinois eight or nine years and afterwards moved to Strawberry Point, where they have since resided. Mrs. Joy was ever ready to lend a hand if a person was in need. Our community has lost one of its oldest settlers, a respected woman and a kind neighbor. She was taken sick Sunday morning and the following Friday her soul passed into eternity. Besides her husband and four children she leaves eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of friends to mourn her death. The funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday by Rev. Sutton, assisted by Rev. J. F. Hestwood and the remains were laid to rest in this cemetery.
