Elkader Register, Thur., 7 Feb. 1901.
At the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. M. Paul, at this place, Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock, Frederick Ehrlich quietly passed away to the other shore. He was born at Hesse Cassel, Germany, Oct. 9th, 1820, and was 80 years, 3 months and 27 days old at his death.
In Germany Mr. Ehrlich learned the trade of baker and miller, and as a miller he has worked for the most of his days. He was united in marriage with Catherine __hr (Two letters before the hr, possibly Fe.), Dec. 25th, 1845, and in 1852 they came to America settling in Fairfield county, Ohio, where they resided until the fall of 1866, when they came to Clayton county and engaged in farming near Giard. In 1869 they moved to Elkader and Mr. Ehrlich became the miller at the Elkader mill, where he was engaged for the most of eleven years.
Of the union above mentioned there were seven children, five of whom survive to mourn the loss of both father and mother, Mrs. Ehrlich having died March 22nd, 1892. These are C. W. Ehrlich, H. O. Ehrlich, of Seattle, Wash.; L. Y. Ehrlich, of Elgin, Ia.; and Mrs. Ed. Russell and Mrs. E. M. Paul, of Elkader.
After Mr. Ehrlich left the Elkader mill, about 1880, he moved onto his little farm southwest of town, and then after a few years sold his place and made his home with L. Y. Ehrlich and Mrs. Paul. This has been the case especially since the death of his wife.
Mr. Ehrlich was a kind hearted father, husband and neighbor, honored in every respect, he endeavored to lead an upright Christian life. In our acquaintance of over twenty years we never heard anyone speak ill of him, or he of anyone. He had fought the good fight and entered into the reward of the just.
The funeral was held at the Congregational church this afternoon, the service being conducted by the pastor Rev. G. W. Baxter. The interment was beside his wife in the East Side cemetery.
