Elkader Register, Thur., 16 May 1901. Clayton column.

Frederick H. Meder was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany,, Oct. 22, 1821, and died May 7th, 1901, having arrived at the ripe old age of 79 years, 6 months and 7 days. He emigrated to the United States in July 1853, and shortly after came to Communia, becoming a member of the German colony then in existence at that place. He was married Sept. 15th, 1853, to Albertina Gade. One son, Edwin, blessed this union. On a dissolution of this colony he purchased eighty acres of land in Cox Creek twp., this county, which farm was his home for thirteen years, when in 1866 (or 1868) he disposed of this farm and bought 220 acres in Clayton twp., eighty acres of which he held a patent from Franklin Pierce as title. He had continued to till the soil of this farm and on which he had built a cozy home since 1867. During these years he had made himself a useful neighbor and citizen. He was for a number of years connected with the Farmers' Insurance Co., of Communia, also for many years was treasurer of Eagle school district. Mr. Meder was a man of thorough business qualifications with whom it was a pleasure to do business, and who was ever held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. The Funeral was held on Thursday afternoon and the remains were laid to that well earned rest beside those of his good wife in Clayton cemetery. He is survived by one son, Edwin of Clayton township, and two brothers, Henry of Mederville, and a brother in South Africa. Rev. Sommerlad of Garnavillo conducted the last sad rites in his usual touching manner. May his eternal slumber be the softest.
