Elkader Register, Thur., 11 July 1901. Clayton column.
The good people of this community were painfully shocked last Friday evening, July 5th, to learn of the sudden demise of Mrs. Wm. Stearns, nee Nancy Gambrel. Although Mrs. Stearns has been in ill health since the death of her son Fred, there seemed to be no real dangerous symptoms but the deep grief from the death of her sons and husband in a short period of time steadily bore her down toward the grave, yet she suffered with a Christian fortitude alone till the Almighty in his wisdom, severed the tender cord releasing her from the earthly cares to be reunited with her beloved ones that have crossed the dark river before her, there to await her coming, where joy and peace is everlasting, and where her beloved husband peacefully dwells in that spiritual building not made by hands eternal in the heavens. Nancy Gambrel was born in Hamilton county, Ohio, Sept. 15th, 1825, and was married to Wm. Stearns in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 7th, 1846, where they continued to reside for a few years, when they came to Clayton. Five children came to bless this union of young hearts - Nettie, Edwin, Charles, Elmorina and Fred, of which Charles and Elmorina, now Mrs. H. Klienhaus of Beatrice, Nebr., survive her. Mrs. Stearns was a thorough Christian woman who was ever ready to aid the needy and cheer the afflicted, and her greatest joy and comfort was her home surrounded by her family. The Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Wheat, and the remains laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Clayton cemetery Sunday afternoon, followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors. May her eternal slumbers be the sweetest.
Mother in your peaceful slumbers,
Resting on the golden shore,
There with Father, Fred and others,
Reunited evermore
