Elkader Register, Thur., 4 July 1901.
At the home of S. H. F. Schoulte in Farmersburg twp., Thursday evening, June 27th, occurred an accident which resulted in the death of his brother, William Schulte.
The usual work of the day on the farm had been completed, and when it came time to retire, owing to some repairs being made on the house and the warm weather, some of the boys were sleeping in the barn. At this time they invited their uncle William to go with them.
One of the boys said he would spread the blanket, which he did on the top of the oat bin on which he and Mr. Schulte were standing. This bin rises about five feet above the hay mow. As the boy was spreading the blanket, Wm. stepped backward off the bin striking the hay in such a manner as to break his neck.
He tried to make light of his injuries but soon his brother Frank was summoned and as soon as possible Dr. Schmidt of Garnavillo was called and then the extent of the unfortunate man's injuries were discovered.
The injured man lived until Friday afternoon when he passed away.
The deceased was a son of William and Katie Schulte, and was born in Garnavillo twp., July 24, 1854. He was reared and educated in this county and on Feb. 16, 1882, married Amelia, daughter of Fred Palas, now of Elkader. Mrs. Schulte died a few years since, leaving two children, a son and a daughter, who since the death of their mother have made their home here with relatives.
The funeral services were held Sunday at the Catholic church at Garnavillo, after which his remains were brought to Elkader and laid beside those of his wife.
