Elkader Argus, Wed., 25 Dec. 1901.
On Friday morning occurred the death of Robert Keegan, a familiar figure in this vicinity for nearly forty years.
The life and death of Robert Keegan are examples of the many human tragedies that are lived among us and which have for their cause some inscrutable happening which none but the dead could explain. Mr. Keegan was a man of considerable intelligence. Conversation with him and occasionally a confidence would reveal that the man had in him material that would never be suspected from the exterior. He was an expert penman and bookkeeper and years ago when Chicago was in its infancy held a responsible position in that city.
But the change came, ambition lost never to be regained, pride humiliated beyond repair, he became the man we knew and pitied. His greatest fault was inability to withstand temptation or to regain that which he lost. Poor old Bob, if his life of later years was not of much known benefit to the community, he harmed none but himself and it is likely there were some good deeds to help balance his account.
When working Mr. Keegan was faithful and to be trusted and in this way earned friends who gave him burial. Services were held at the Congregational church Saturday afternoon, Rev. Baxter delivering the sermon. Interment in the East Side cemetery.
