Funeral services were held Saturday, May 23, at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church for Mrs. Ella Stence, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. A. Gorman officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph's cemetery. Pallbearers were Jake Steen, Don Tieden, Valmah Wright, Harold Downey, Frank Roeder and Matt Feeney.
Mrs. Ella Stence was born November 21, 1885, in Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Lena Cook, and died May 21, 1959, at the Delaware County Memorial Hospital, Manchester, after a two day illness of a coronary disease.
September 29, 1908, she was married to John Raymond Stence.
Mrs. Stence spent her entire life in Clayton County. She was a member of the Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Joseph's Guild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Francis, who died June 2, 1954.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Glen Probert, Volga, and Mrs. Helen Allen, Strawberry Point, and four sons, John Stence, Vincent Stence and James Stence, Elkader, and Jerry Stence, Garnavillo, and 25 grandchildren.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Daniel O'Leary Sr., Dubuque; Elmer Cook and Niel, Waterloo; Mrs. Murrel Stence, Alexandria, Va.; Mr. and Mrs. Gene Stence, Iowa Falls; Nancy Stence, Iowa City; Patricia Probert, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Inez Brackin, Elgin; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wenger and Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Cook, Elgin.
