The death of A. Ely at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ira Rosborough at Hancock, Minn., occurred last Tuesday afternoon after an illness of four weeks. He was stricken with paralysis at that time and at his advanced age was unable to withstand the second shock. He was 80 years, 9 months and 20 days old. He was a resident of Rock Rapids for 29 years.

Ashley Ely was born January 17, 1831, near Utica, N.Y., and when a boy he went to Smithville, Canada, where he was married in 1852 to Miss Samantha Sargent, who died about twenty years ago. Four children were born to this union, Mrs. Eva Rosborough of this city, Mrs. George W. Wilson of Manning, N.D., Wm. Ely of Dickinson, N.D., Mrs. Ira Rosborough of Hancock, Minn. He leaves 17 grand children and 12 great grand children to mourn his departure.

The deceased during his long residence here made many lasting friends by his persistently manly way of doing business. He was a brick and stone mason, and completed many a large contract with fidelity. His probity and honesty was without question. He lived a moral life as his long years on this earth attests.

The remains arrived in the city last evening, and were taken to Shannon's undertaking rooms, from where they were taken this afternoon at 2 o'clock to the M.E. church, where services were held, and the interment made in Riverview cemetery.

Note: Ashley Ely & his wife Samantha lived in the Strawberry Point vicinity for many years, arriving about 1859 & removing to Lyon co. between 1881 & 1883.
