Tim C. Hurley, 67, Volga farmer and former clothing store operator, died at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, April 4, while attending the wedding dance of his niece, Mrs. Lloyd Freilinger, at the Waterville Rainbow Gardens.
Mr. Hurley operated clothing stores in Volga from 1911 to 1931, and in Elma from 1931 to 1935. From 1935 to the time of his death he was actively engaged in farming on the old Hurley homestead north of Volga, where he was born the son of Bernard Hurley and Catherine Nevins Hurley. He was one of a family of 11 children.
Mr. Hurley was married to Anna Moody O'Brien of McGregor Oct. 17, 1947. She survives, together with a daughter, Helene Therese, 10 years old. Also surviving is one brother, Michael P. Hurley of Elkader, and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7, at 9:30 at the McTaggart funeral home, Elkader, followed by a requiem high mass at Sacred Heart Church, Volga, at 10 o'clock, and burial in St. Joseph's cemetery, Elkader. Celebrant of the funeral mass was Father Karl J. Klein, who also delivered the sermon. Father Francis Phelan of McGregor was in the sanctuary. Two grand-nephews, Kenneth Hurley and Robert Roethler, served mass. Other acolytes were John Orr, John Olson and Michael Whittle. Pallbearers were six nephews: Carroll Geraghty, Bernard Hurley, Joe Hurley, Eugene Milewsky, Ray Roethler and William Roethler.
