Funeral services are being held today, Thursday, March 12, 1959, for William Gruel, Monona, at the St. John Lutheran church, Farmersburg, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. R. H. Steege officiating. Burial will be at the Farmersburg-Wagner cemetery. Pallbearers will be Hallet Baade, Roger Henkes, Starr Baade, Edward Sass, Calvin Ihde, Lloyd Lenth, Loren Dettman and Don Montour.

Those taking care of the flowers will be Mrs. Starr Baade and Mrs. Herb Ihde.

William Gruel, son of William and Christine Mueller Gruel, was born June 14, 1874, at Garnavillo, and died March 8, 1959, of the complications of old age.

Mr. Gruel was confirmed April 1, 1888, at the Lutheran church, Garnavillo, by the Rev. Sommerlad. After his confirmation he worked as a hired man on various farms and later as a carpenter.

After his marriage to Anna Drews, Feb. 15, 1900, at Farmersburg, he started farming and farmed five years between Garnavillo and Clayton, then moved to a farm in Monona township where they lived until March, 1916, when they moved to their present home. Mr. and Mrs. Gruel celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Feb. 15, 1950.

He was a member of the St. John Lutheran church, Farmersburg, its Brotherhood, and had served on the church council for many years.

Mr. Gruel was preceded in death by his parents, three children who died in infancy, and two brothers, Herman and Henry Gruel.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Lester Gruel, Harvard, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. Amelia Koss, Garnavillo.
