Lieut-Col. L.S. Butler
Many of our readers will remember and learn with regret the death of L.S. Butler who resided in Monona in 1866-7, and later purchased and owned a part of what is now known as the Walch farm west of town. In 1869 he married Alice N., a sister of Theo. Sherman. She died in Jan'y, 1872, and lies buried in Monona cemetery. In 1875 he sold out and went to California, where he has since resided at Los Angeles, though he was in Sacramento at the time of his death, attending the Odd Fellow's encampment. Col. Butler was a man highly respected. He served his country with honorable distinction in the great war of the '60's, and from the organization of the G.A.R. took great interest in that society, holding many positions of honor and trust conferred by his comrades; he was also in the Loyal Legion, a member of the Odd Fellows and the Junior Order of American Mechanics. He was very popular with his fellow citizens.
A Los Angeles paper says:
The deceased was very well known in this city, where he had resided for nearly twenty five years, as Maj. Butler, although his proper title was lieutenant-colonel. He was born in Ohio sixty-four years ag, and educated at Oberlin College. After leaving college, he studied law, and was admitted to practice just before the beginning of the civil war. Abandoning his profession, he enlisted in the Union army, and served throughout war, being discharged in 1865 as a first lieutenant. Returning to his law practice and continued it for several years. About twenty-five years ago he came to California, and for a time resided in Riverside, but later he came to Los Angeles, where he had since resided.~Monona Leader, September 28, 1899
Note: his wife, Alice N. (Sherman) Butler, was d/o Fredrick & Minerva (Severance) Sherman. They also are buried in the Monona City cemetery, as is Alice's brother Theodore.
