The citizens of our quiet little town were horrified over the arrival of the telegram Monday morning, stating that Fred Stearns, of this place, a brakeman on the C.M. & St. P. railroad, had been killed at 2 o’clock that morning. He was attempting to swing himself on the moving train between two flat cars, while at LaCresent, Minn., and in so doing slipped and fell. The oil box on the journal of the truck struck him in the stomach which was torn open. He died almost instantly.
He is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Stearns, of this place, and their grief over the terrible accident is beyond description. His body arrived here Tuesday afternoon and was buried Wednesday, a very large number attending the funeral.
Fred was sunny tempered, jovial young man, highly respected by all who knew him, and there is not one but who mourns his untimely death and whose heart goes out in sympathy to the aged parents in this great affliction. Deceased was twenty-seven years, three months and two days of age.
