Fred Schneider, son of Victor and Mary Wenger Schneider, was born March 29, 1873, in Marion Township, Clayton County, and died at his farm home three miles west of Elkader Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1959, at the age of 86 years, eight months and 23 days.

Mr. Schneider was a diabetic and had been in failing health the last six months. However, complications necessitated surgery and he was hospitalized at LaCrosse, Wis., for nine weeks, returning to his home four weeks ago.

June 20, 1895, he was married to Pauline Pagan at Elgin. Mr. and Mrs. Schneider observed their 64th wedding anniversary in June of 1959.

Mr. Schneider spent his entire life in this community, except for one year in Kansas, the first year after his marriage. He was a carpenter earlier in life and worked with his brothers John, Joe and Vic. In 1902 he moved to the farm where he resided until his death.

Mr. Schneider was a member of the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church, Elkader.

He was preceded in death by a son, Freddie, who died at the age of 18.

He is survived by his wife and four children, Harry at home, Bessie, Mrs. William Sutter, West Union, Anne at home, and Alex of St. Olaf; one sister, Lena, Mrs. Ted Zastrow, Oconomowoc, Wis.; four brothers, Joe, Elgin, Vic, Elkader, Dan, Rochester, Minn., and Alf, El Cerrito, Calif.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 26, at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Paul Kitterer officiating. Burial was at the East Side cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kenneth Schneider, Harold Schneider, Melvin Schneider, Paul Schneider, William Schneider and Clarence Peake.

Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Alter Mattheis, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Garber, and Elmer Garber, Pierre, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Schneider and Kenneth Schneider, Rochester, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schneider and John Schneider, Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Roger Schneider, Waverly; Harold Schneider, Mrs. Paul Larson, Paula Larson, Eunice Pagan, and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Peake, Elgin.
