Michael R. Hurley, son of Bernard and Catherine Nevins Hurley, was born Feb. 14, 1882, on a homestead farm in Highland Township north of Volga City.

On Nov. 8, 1959, in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Elkader, as high mass for Holy Name Sunday was closing, Mr. Hurley suffered a stroke and was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, where he died at 11:05 p.m., Nov. 15, 1959.

He was educated in a rural school near his Highland home and at Valder's Business College, Decorah.

On Nov. 15, 1904, Mr. Hurley married Elizabeth G. McNeill at Delmont, S.D., where he engaged in building houses. Early in 1905 they bought a farm two miles west of Elkader, where they have since resided.

Besides Mrs. Hurley, seven children survive: Mrs. Bernice Barry, Mapleton; Mrs. Mary Gertrude White, Rock Island, Ill.; Mrs. Frances O'Brien, Whittemore; Mrs. Agnes Scott, McGregor; Colette, Chicago; Angela at Alverno College, Milwaukee; and Bernard, Milwaukee, Wis. Fifteen grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Hurley's pioneer ancestors began to migrate to Clayton County in 1836 from County Galway, Ireland. He was preceded in death by two half-sisters, one half-brother, six sisters and four brothers, John J., Jeremiah, Timothy and Dr. W. J. Hurley of Chicago.

Funeral services were held in St. Joseph's Church, Elkader, Nov. 19, 1959, at 10:00 a.m., with burial in the church cemetery in a lot near the grave of Mr. Hurley's pioneer grandfather, J. Hurley of Kilbeggan Parish, County Galway, Ireland.

Msgr. Daniel A. Gorman, pastor, conducted the services. The Rev. Francis J. Phelan of McGregor and the Rev. Leo Derga of Mercy Hospital, Oelwein, were in the sanctuary. The acolytes were: Kenneth Hurley, Robert Roethler, Michael Stence and Michael Walch. St. Joseph's school choir, directed by Sister Mary Madonna, sang during the requiem high mass.

The pallbearers were six nephews: Joe Hurley, William Roethler, Ray Roethler, Dan McNeill, Ed Finley, and Carroll Geraghty.
