Joe Thurn died suddenly at his home in Littleport after suffering a stroke about 8:00 Monday morning, April 20, 1953, at the age of 79 years, four months and 25 days.
Mr. Thurn was born in Germany Nov. 26, 1873, and was baptized as an infant. He came to this country when he was about one year old. He was reared in the vicinity of Edgewood and on December 27, 1898, he was united in marriage to Ada Durfey also of that vicinity. They were engaged in farming first near the old Thurn homestead, later moving near Littleport until he retired to a home in Littleport five years ago. One year was spent in Strawberry Point and one year in Waterloo.
His wife and companion for 53 years was seriously injured February 1 of this year and died February 9. Three years ago they had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.
Survivors are one son, Harlan, on the home farm, three daughters, Mrs. Clara Wistrick of Elkader, Mrs. Mable Diehl of Waterloo, and Beulah Krinkey of S. Beloit, Ill.; three half-brothers, William, John and Ernst of Edgewood, 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, four half-brothers, and one half-sister, one grandson, and one great-granddaughter.
His six grandsons served as pallbearers. Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the Rhines funeral home in Edgewood. The Rev. Ben Shaw, pastor of the Congregational church officiated. Burial was in the Edgewood cemetery.
