Henry John Frederick Lenth, youngest son of Frederick and Marie Halter Lenth, was born February 21, 1869, in Farmersburg township. His early youth was spent on the farm on which he was born and he was educated at the Mecklenburg school in Clayton county. He was baptized and confirmed by the Rev. F. W. Seifert at Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center, his confirmation taking place on the 2nd of April, 1882.
On December 15, 1892, he was united in marriage to Amelia Lembke at the home of her parents in Read township where they established their new home until they moved to Elkader in 1903. The couple had five children. One daughter, Amanda, preceded him in death in 1907. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick and William, his parents, and a granddaughter, Mary Lou Hodach.
Mr. Lenth has been a member of this community for the past fifty years and united with the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church shortly after making his home in Elkader. Earlier in his life he served as a town councilman and for the past twenty years he has served as a member of the Clayton county board of inheritance tax appraisers. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 72, A.F. and A.M., and the DeMolay Consistory of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of Clinton.
On December 15, 1942, the deceased and his wife, Amelia, had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary here in Elkader, and this past year were able to quietly commemorate their 60th wedding anniversary at their home.
Mr. Lenth began failing in health about a year ago and became bedridden about six weeks ago. He died at his home at 1:30 a.m. April 8, 1953, at the age of 84 years, 1 month, and 17 days. He is survived by his wife, Amelia, and by one son and three daughters: Harvey, Mrs. Vandy (Lucy) Hodach, Muscoda, Wis.; Mrs. H. K. (Helen) Roggensack, and LoRene. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Stephen Paul Roggensack, and Amalie Beth Roggensack.
Masonic funeral services were held at the Witt funeral chapel Friday evening with both the DeMolay Consistory of Clinton and the Elkader Blue lodge in charge. Church services were held at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 11, 1953. The Rev. Paul Kitterer officiated.
Soloist Bob Allen sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. Robert Roehlk, organist.
Honorary escorts were: George Ehrhardt, Fred Ihlenfeldt, Charles Gottschalk and Herman Lenth. Active pallbearers were George Scofield, Delbert Roggensack, Charles Meder, Fern Sharp, Arthur Johnson and Dr. L. A. Meder. Assisting with the flowers were Donna Sloan, Mrs. William Possehl and Ora Lenth. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.
