William Ernest Buckman, son of John Buckman and his wife Friedericka, nee Otting, was born August 31, 1871 on the present Carl Radloff farm in Farmersburg township. In early infancy he was baptized at the Lutheran church in Garnavillo. He spent his early years on the farm of his parents, attending school when he had attained the proper age.

On December 22, 1905, he was united in marriage to Anna Harnack. Shortly after this they moved to their farm east of town, where they continued to live until 1950 when they moved to their home in Farmersburg.

Mr. Buckman was for 40 years a director of the Garnavillo insurance company, assessor for 18 years, secretary of the Commission company when it was organized, also secretary of the fire company when this was organized, and township clerk for many years.

Mr. Buckman enjoyed good health most of his life. His health began to fail near the end of January of this year. He was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids on March 18 for examination and treatment. He returned home for a few days on March 21. He returned to the hospital March 23 and submitted to an operation on March 27. He rallied somewhat after the operation and on Thursday, April 9, his son, Clarence, had gone to Cedar Rapids to bring him home. But as they took him from his room in a wheel chair he suffered a heart attack and died at 10:10 a.m. He lived 81 years, 7 months, and 8 days,

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Clarence of Farmersburg; and one daughter, Alice, Mrs. Carl Radloff of St. Olaf; three grandchildren, Mrs. Eugene Miller of Monona, A/2c L'Dean Radloff of Egland Field, Florida, and Roger Radloff; one great-grandchild, Connie Lou Miller; two brothers, Fred and Henry of Farmersburg, besides many other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. from the home and 1:45 p.m. from St. John's Lutheran church, Farmersburg. Burial was at the Garnavillo cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Herbert Zurcher, George Radloff, Marvin Mueller, Carl Mueller, Gus Tielbar, and Chas. Stade.

Honorary pallbearers were: Fritze Mueller, Robert Waaskow, James Mathews, Hale Corlett Sr., Ed. Kaiser, Wm. Radloff.

Flower girls were: Mrs. Herbert Zurcher, Mrs. Harley Palas, Mrs. Carl Mueller, Mrs. James Probert
