The community was startled and shocked by the announcement, Saturday morning that Mrs. Jackson had just died. Death always brings a subdued feeling and gloom with its presence, but when he suddenly strikers down a widely known and loved victim an unusual seriousness cannot be avoided.

Mrs. Susan A. Jackson, wife of Rev. C. J. B. Jackson, pastor of the Baptist Church, departed this life Saturday morning, October 30th at 8 o’clock. On the 19th of October she gave birth to a daughter, and from that time she continued to grow worse until death relieved her from her intense suffering.

Mrs. Jackson was born and raised in the state of New York. Some fifteen years ago she came to Iowa, and as a teacher her winning ways, her cheering words and unremitting toil have encouraged and stimulated many of her pupils to lives of Christian usefulness. About that time she was happily married to a husband of her choice, and a long life of domestic enjoyment and usefulness seemed to lie just before her. Alas! How transient are earthly treasures. In three short weeks after their happy wedding day her supporter, her stay, her idolized husband is snatched from her, with scarcely a moments warning, by the cold embrace of death. Then it was that of her unfaltering faith in her Heavenly Father and her noble Christian graces shone so prominently. In imitation of her Master she devoted her life to doing good. With pleasing smiles and cheering words she was active in every work that could advance the good, the true and the beautiful.

Seven years ago by her marriage with her to the Rev. C. J. B. Jackson, she assumed a position that was peculiarly adapted and became a pastor’s wife. As soon as her influence had been felt at West Union, her former home, and here, until there shall yet be gathered an abundant harvest from the seeds sown by her loving hand. As a wife she was ever patient, earnest, loving and true. And in her last sickness how her heart yearned towards a helpless babe, her only child. She leaves it as a sacred charge to her husband, her mother and sister, and most of all she trusts it with her loving Savior.

The funeral service was conducted in the Baptist Church, Monday morning, at 9:30, the Rev. Mr. Fisk assisted by Rev. Church, officiating. A large audience paid breathless attention to the earnest, comforting words that fell from the speaker’s lips. The family and friends departed on the 11:00 train to deposit in the family burying ground near McGregor, all that is left to them of the loving wife, the dutiful daughter and the faithful sister.
