Catherine Hayes, daughter of John and Addie Hayes, was born July 4, 1865, on the Hayes homestead in Highland township, Clayton County, Iowa.

On Feb. 12, 1889, she was united in marriage with Henry Peterman, and they started farming on the Daniel Peterman homestead in Highland.

To this union was born a son Earl of Volga, and a daughter, Ruby Starr Thomas, who preceded her mother in death in 1929. Mrs. Peterman had six brothers and five sisters.

Three brothers, Tom, John and William Hayes, and three sisters, Mrs. Dave Robinson, Mrs. Samuel Robinson and Grace Hayes, preceded her in death.

Following the death of her husband on Nov. 29, 1927, Mrs. Peterman made her home with her son Earl and wife on the farm.

In May 1950, they moved to Volga, where she died Dec. 23, 1953, from the frailties of old age, at the age of 88 years 5 months and 19 days.

Surviving besides her son and daughter-in-law are seven grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, three brothers, Ed Hayes, Strawberry Point; Vern and Harry Hayes, Blooming Prairie, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Duff, Strawberry Point, and Mrs. Frances Wilson, of Faribault, Minn., and other relatives.

Services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Presbyterian church, with Charles Carlston, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Illyria cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Forrest Peterman, Lee Peterman, George Meader, Kenneth Scott, LuRoy Fox and William Moore.
