Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Gottschalk were held Wednesday, September 16, at Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center with the Rev. J. H. Zerhusen officiating. Burial was in the New Clayton Center cemetery.
Emma Marie Gottschalk was born July 12, 1873, in Read township, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Sehk Kahlbaum. She died on Sunday, September 13, 1953, after an illness of four months at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Thompson at Monona.
Mrs. Gottschalk was baptized in August, 1873, by the Rev. F. W. Seifert, and was confirmed April 18, 1886. She attended the rural school at Clayton Center.
On April 5, 1892, she was married to William J. Gottschalk at the Zion Lutheran church at Clayton Center by the Rev. F. W. Seifert. They farmed in Boardman township until their retirement in 1946 when they moved to Elkader.
She is survived by her five children: Lucinda, Mrs. Albert Glawe, St. Olaf; Effie, Mrs. Kenneth Thompson, Monona; Harvey, Garnavillo; John, St. Olaf and Vallie at Home; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one child, who died in infancy, her parents, two sisters and one brother.
Mrs. Gottschalk was a member of the Zion Lutheran church of Clayton Center and the Ladies Aid of the church.
Pallbearers were six grandsons: Lloyd Glawe, Verdine Glawe, Bernell Glawe, Virgil Thompson, Roger Thompson and Edward Coobs.
Relatives attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. George Borchers, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Schaefer, Oelwein, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schaefer and Miss Emma Schaefer of Fayette.
