Clayton County Register, Thur., 19 Nov. 1953.

Garnavillo: Cyril Matt and Arthur Meyer of National were drowned Sunday when the boat in which they were riding capsized.

The accident occurred on the Mississippi river above McGregor. A third man, Carroll Wright, was rescued by a Prairie du Chien fisherman after all three men had clung to the overturned boat for a time.

The bodies were recovered late Sunday afternoon in 30 feet of water one and one-half miles downstream from the scene of the accident:

Cyril Matt was born April 29, 1919. He attended the Pioneer and National district schools and was graduated from the Garnavillo high school. Immediately following his graduation he enlisted in the navy and spent the next seven years there, returning home in 1945. Since then he has been engaged in farming at National

He is survived by his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Matt of Monona; one brother, Harold of Castalia, and one sister, Mrs. Don Uriell of Garnavillo. His mother preceded him in death in 1949. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at the Tuecke Funeral Home in Garnavillo, and at St. Mary's church in McGregor. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery at Garnavillo.

Funeral services were military, with the Clayton County AMVET Post taking charge. A full firing squad from Waterloo conducted the military graveside rites. Local members of the AMVETS' and representatives of the posts in the Fourth District attended in a body. Mr. Matt was a past commander of AMVET Post No. 27.
