Garnavillo: Cyril Matt and Arthur Meyer of National were drowned Sunday when the boat in which they were riding capsized.
The accident occurred on the Mississippi river above McGregor. A third man, Carrol Wright, was rescued by a Prairie du Chien fisherman after all three men had clung to the overturned boat for a time.
The bodies were recovered late Sunday afternoon in 30 feet of water one and one-half miles downstream from the scene of the accident;
Arthur F. Meyer was born Nov. 6, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Meyer. He attended the Equity district school and Garnavillo high school. He served four years in the army in the European theater, returning home in 1946. He was married June 16, 1953, to Donna Mae Winch of Guttenberg.
Survivors include his parents; four brothers, Lloyd of McGregor, LeRoy of Farmersburg, Irving and Albert of Manly; three sisters, Mrs. Carl (Delores) Klemp, Mrs. Donald (Helen) Kann, Guttenberg, and Mrs. Ervin (Mildred) Taake, Elkader.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at St. Peter Lutheran church with the Rev. J. A. Pannkuk officiating. Burial was made in the Garnavillo cemetery.
Funeral services were military with the Clayton County AMVET Post taking charge. A full firing squad from Waterloo conducted the military graveside rites. Local members of the AMVETS' and representatives of the post's in the Fourth District attended in a body. Mr. Meyer was a past vice-commander of AMVET Post No. 27.
