Mary Gipper Lamphier was born April 15, 1872, at St. Sebald, near Strawberry Point, the daughter of Henry and Mary Vollmer Gipper. She was baptized at St. Sebald and in her youth attended the church school there and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On May 27, 1890, she was united in marriage to Elmer Lamphier. To them was born twelve children, and she also reared Bert Lamphier, a step-son.

Her life has been lived in and around Volga and Strawberry Point except for twenty years, when she lived at Elkport.

She affiliated with the Presbyterian church eight years ago and had been a faithful and devoted worker. She was a member of the Presbyterian Ladies Aid, the Sunshine club and the Legion Auxiliary.

Her death occurred Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22, at her home in town, following a long illness.

Her husband preceded her in death, also five children: Mrs. Eli (Martha) Hill; Lester, Mrs. Will (Alma) Jones, Clarence and Gracie.

She is survived by four daughters, Sylvia, Dubuque; Mrs. Walter (Esther) Quarterman, Galesburg, Ill.; Mrs. Orman (Arline) Burns, Aurora; Mrs. Harry (Lillian) Boleyn, Volga, and three sons, Henry and Earl of Volga and Harlo of Fayette, also four sisters and two brothers and grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 26, at the Presbyterian church, with the pastor, Charles Carlston in charge. Music was provided by Mrs. George Thomson, pianist, who accompanied Mrs. Lyle Roys, Mrs. Helen Phillips, Robert W. Duff and Earl Peterman when they sang two selections: "Shall We gather at the River" and "When the Roll is Called up Yonder."

Pallbearers were six nephews: Lyle, Erwin, Oscar, Arnold, Dennis and Theodore Lamphier.

Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.

(Note: Among a very long list of friends and relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. August Gipper, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Gipper, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Bert Lamphier, San Diego, Calif.; Mary and Donna Lamphier, Fayette; Austin Lamphier, Clayto_ Lamphier, Waterloo; Virgil Lamphier, Greeley; Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Lamphier, Randalia; Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lamphier, Elkader; Will Jones and sons, Elkport. There were about 40 additional names of attendees.)
