Conrad M. Butts, who died at his home in Giard Twp. Nov. 12, 1913, was born in Marion, Ohio, March 1, 1828. When a boy, with his parents, he moved to LaPorte, Ind., where he resided until 1852, coming to Iowa that year and locating on the farm he has since occupied.
In 18?2 (can't read the decade) he was married to Martha Warner, who died in 1880. To this union seven children were born: S.J. at Mason City; F.C. of Giard; Mrs. D. Cook of Farmersburg and Edwin, residing in Florida. Three died in infancy.
During the Civil War Mr. Butts enlisted in Company D, 4th Iowa Infantry, serving about eighteen months, being in Sherman's march to the sea.
Thus, one by one, the old veterans answer the last Roll Call, one by one our pioneers are called to the other shore.
Funeral services were held Friday p.m. from his late home, conducted by Rev. Gauger. Interment was in Giard cemetery, where he was laid away with the other members of his family who had preceded him.
