William Salem Morse was born near Volga, Iowa, on May 17, 1875. His parents were Salem and Katheryn Tenney Morse. He lived in this community during his early years and on December 24, 1895, was united in marriage to Mildred V. Campbell, who survives. Since their marriage they have lived in three other Iowa towns, namely Monona, Elkader and Keokuk. They have lived in Volga about fifty years.
While in his early life, he was variously employed, later he took up carpentry and followed it for years. He was especially interested in cabinet making and enjoyed working in his shop long after he retired. He was also much interested in baseball.
His death occurred Wednesday forenoon, October 7, following a long illness.
Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Morse and all grew to maturity. They are: Mrs. Eva Berse of Volga; Clarence F. Morse, Dubuque; A. Vincent Morse, who died at Alexandria, VA, in December 1952; Mrs. Margaret Hrdina, Chicago; Harry L. Morse, Carlineville, Ill.; William L. Morse of Moscow, Idaho; and Edward L. Morse of Pittsburgh, PA.
Besides his wife and six living children, Mr. Morse leaves fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His only brother, Ernest Morse of Oelwein preceded him in death two years ago.
The funeral was held at the Blake and Gill chapel, Saturday at 10:00 a.m., with the Rev. Floyd R. Maynard, local Methodist minister, officiating.
Mrs. Leo Grether and Donald Whitford sang "Rock of Ages" and "Abide With Me," accompanied by Mrs. W. K. Oldfather.
Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery. Pallbearers were: Lester Keilholtz, Frank Phillips, William Sloan, Robert Garms, Fred Rinkert and Leo Becker.

Morse, Carlineville, Ill.; Mrs. Vera Hrdina and daughter Sandra, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Rooney, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. George Palmer, Whiting, Ind.; Edward L. Morse, Pittsburgh, PA; Edward Morse, Rockford, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Morse, Epworth; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bills, Oelwein; Mrs. Ethel Hutchinson, Arlington.
