Mabel Jean Parsons, the elder daughter of John and Mattie Stacy Parsons, was born in Volga, Iowa, Jan. 27, 1885. In childhood and youth she attended the Methodist Sunday school and in her youth she became active in Epworth League. She was received into the membership of the church during the pastorate of the Rev. C. W. Dunham.

She was graduated from the Volga high school in the class of 1901, later receiving her bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teachers college, and after that a master's degree from Chicago university. After several years in the teaching profession she took up the study of law and was graduated from the law school of Northwestern university at Evanston, Ill. After graduation she practiced law in Chicago for some time. Then she sacrificed her professional career and returned to Volga to care for her aging parents. After they were gone she and her sister, Lulu, made their home in Volga.

She was active in the Volga study club, and was made president in 1951. An enthusiastic leader, she carried forward the work of this federated club as long as her health permitted her to do so. Her death occurred early Wednesday morning, Sept. 30, 1953.

Funeral services were held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church. The Rev Floyd Maynard, pastor, read two of her poems in connection with his discourse. They were selected from quite a number which she had written. Mrs. Wallace Oldfather, pianist, accompanied Donald Whitford and Mrs. Leo Grether who sang "Some Day the Silver Cord Will Break" and "God Will Take Care of You."

Bearers were Clifford Brandt, Oakland Probert, Fred Gernand, Ernest Smith, Robert Duff and Roy Candee.

Burial was in Hill Crest cemetery.
