Early Friday morning at his home south of town occurred the death of Jas. A. Russell. Mr. Russell had been in poor health some of the time for several years and for the past two month had been rapidly failing.
James Adelbert Russell was born at Fredericksburg, Chickasaw county, Iowa, May 29th, 1859. When he was three years old his father moved the family to McGregor where his mother died soon after leaving three small children. The family was scattered after the death of the mother and James was taken to the home of Peter Miller, of this township, where he lived until 17 years old when he started out for himself.
On Nov. 26th, 1879, he was married to Miss Martha Mitchell. Two children were born to them, Julia and James, both of whom are at home. Soon after his marriage Mr. Russell bought his farm south of town and began to improve and make it a desirable home for his family. Almost his last work in life was to make additional provisions for their comfort.
Besides his wife and children there are left to mourn his death, one brother, George, of Thorpe, Iowa, and Mrs. Isabelle West, of St. Anthony, Idaho, both of whom were present.
Mr. Russell was for many years a member of the Elkader Masonic lodge and one of its most faithful members. He will be greatly missed by the members of the fraternity as he was a regular attendant.
At the funeral on Sunday, Rev. Baxter officiated and the Masons took charge and reverently consigned the body of their deceased brother to its last resting place. About 60 Masons were in attendance, a number being present from other towns. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.
