Note: The following news article is not really an obituary, but may be the only reference to Mrs. Russell's death & burial.
The 1856 IA State census and 1860 U.S. census enumerated the Russell family:
1856 Iowa State census, Yanke twp., Chickasaw co., Iowa:
J.W. Russell, age 30, born N.Y., farmer, 1 yr in Iowa
S.E. Russell, age 29, born N.Y., 1 yr in Iowa
J.E. Russell, age 1, born Iowa1860 U.S. census, Mendon township, family no. 340:
Wilkins Russel, age 37 (or 35), occupation Mason, born New York; Susan Russel, age 27, born New York; and their children Julia (age 5) and James (age 2), both born in IowaIf James was 7 years old when his mother died, the year would have been about 1865. WPA grave records do not include Susan's burial, which probably in Pleasant Grove cemetery, McGregor.

...from the Elkader Register, Thursday evening, July 20, 1899:James A. Russell and daughter Julia were at McGregor Sunday and while there Mr. Russell visited the cemetery and found the grave of his mother, Mrs. J.W. Russell, nee Susan Dana, who died when James was only 7 years old, and, who with a brother and sister were left to the charity of the world, their father having left them. Mr. Russell expresses many thanks to the McGregor Cemetery Association and Mr. Sites the sexton, for the care that has been given that grave, marked by a pine slab and unvisited for so many years.
